Patterns
For the past week we have been working on creating, extending, and describing patterns. The grade 2s have been working on creating, extending, and describing growing and shrinking patterns, and patterns with two attributes.
MEdicine Wheels
Yesterday Mrs. Sweeney's grade twos invited the grade twos from our class to join them in learning more about the First Nations people of Canada. They learned all about the medicine wheel, including some of their beliefs in it such as directions, seasons, animals, elements of Earth and stages of life.
The grade twos used pieces of pre-cut maple wood that Mrs. Sweeney's grandfather donated and the 4 colours of paint (red, black, white, and yellow) for the wheel.

Visualizing
We have been working on creating vivid mental images while reading.
"It's like making a movie in my head." - Emily
"I need to use my 5 senses." - Meighan
"It helps to see and feel what the characters are feeling." - Sophia
After reading a poem students were asked to draw their mental images of The Green Giant. The following day they were given a page with two eyes and the statement: It started with 2 eyes... This what they visualized.

The best part was sharing their mental images. Describing what they saw, smelt, heard, felt, and maybe even tasted.

What we did Today
Today we started sorting objects into different groups.
At home gather a few items that go together in some way and ask your child to describe the objects. Ask: Why do these belong together?" Take turns finding more objects that would belong to the set. Then ask your child to look for a way to sort the objects you've found. Which sorting group has more/less?
